Product Description ------------------- The updated LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System 2.0 brings exciting additions that make it a worthwhile purchase, even for owners of edition 1.5. One of the main differences is that the infrared transmitter is now a handy USB device (most PCs have a USB port, but not all: it's always best to check) rather than a serial device, as before. This makes for much easier installation and gives stronger and faster communication between the PC and RCX unit. Another significant difference is the updated RCX software. It has a number of new modules including a "Pro Challenge" mode which gives you the opportunity to test your skills to the limit in six different challenges. The software is easy to install and fun to use: just put the CD-Rom into you PC's drive and it will start the installation process. When prompted, plug the infrared device into a spare USB port, then--again to a prompt--place the robot (or whatever other vehicle you've built) in front of the infrared device and wait a few seconds for the software to download. You're now ready to go. You can follow the on-screen instructions for building your own robot (standard LEGO bricks included in the pack) or use the manual but be warned: it can be a bit tricky to identify some of the parts. Allow yourself a couple of hours to build a robot, (the possibilities are endless, particularly if you use other LEGO kits you own). Then program your robot. It really couldn't be simpler as there's a very easy to use "drag-and-drop" interface that allows you to quickly programme your robot and get him doing the things that you desire within seconds. You can test each step along the way, and the graphical interface is fun to use. LEGO recommended you go through the entire training mission section before starting as this gives some great tips for your robot assembly and it is a lot of fun at the same time. Also included in the CD-ROM are test programs. These give great examples of what is possible, and they also give you the opportunity to deconstruct and change pre-built routines so you can learn by example and test out your own ideas. Once you have got to grips with this package why not go one step further and give your robot an eye with the LEGO Mindstorms: Vision Command, or add on the LEGO Mindstorms: Ultimate Building Set for extended fun. The RCX will even work in conjunction with the Droid Developer Kit. In all, this is a fantastic package that gives weeks if not months of great enjoyment for children aged 12 and above, though prior experience of LEGO and good PC literacy are definitely an advantage. --Robert Hyde

Lego Mindstorms is the best series from Lego ever. When the first came out (1.0) it was sold faster then neirly enything else and now that 2.0 has come out it is doing even better, and the 2.0 is education at the same time as fun and you can build on it and make it even more educational and fun so I recomend it highly.;

...this was worth every single penny and MORE! It is a 700+ set, with two motors, a light sensor and two touch sensors. YOU make your own robot that reacts to light and touch. You even use a VERY easy to use, but powerful program to program your robot with an infra - red beam. There are loads of accessories for this "toy" as well. You can buy remote controls, rotation sensors(this lets you build a scanner), Lights, temperature sensors, capacitators, solar panels, fibre optic cables and the AMAZING lego cam (see vision command. So far I have built a robot that sees a coin, drops it into a basket and it goes in in under a second, a cable car, a security card system, a light gun, where you pull the trigger, it beeps, you reload after ten shots, and you get shot at with a torch. AND MORE. BUY THIS TOY, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT, I PROMISE!!!!!! THE KEY PART TO THIS IS THE RCX. it is a chip, covered in lego pieces, developed by a group called MIT, you can turn it on/off, view the sensor readings, change the program (it holds five at a time) and download programs to it.If you are under 8, buy the younger version (robotics discovery set) or the star wars kits, where you build your own star wars droids. If not, but the robotics invention system, and if you handle it well, buy the ULTIMATE ACCESSORIES KIT, which has an extra touch sensor, a light, a rotation sensorand a remote, later buy VISION COMMAND, so it can respond to what it sees, if all is well, but Exploration mars, where you simulate the NASA mars missions and control your robot from the PC... BUY IT, OR A MISERABLE LIFE LIES AHEAD OF YOU!

The Lego Mindstorm kit is a really easy way to get into the world of building robots. All young kids love to play with Lego, and I for one grew up having loads of fun with the tiny block. Lego has come a long way since then and they have many excellent product available that strech the imagination fay beyond building a simple house.
The mindstorms kit brings together the use of lego with the technilogical advances of the PC. Using was is essentually a scaled down computer (that is probably more powerful than the old ZX Spectrun) you can build a fantastic looking robot and then bring it to life.
The beauty of this product is that throught the software young children can really feel like they have created and then programmed a seemingly complicated device, and this can give a small developing mind a real sense of acievement.
Although the age of this product is aimed at 12 years and above, an 10 year old with a knowledge of computers and the help of a parent (they will enjoy it just as much) can have hours of fun together with this.
I highly recoment this product for anyone with an ambition to take their computer that one stage further.;
